Fishing

North Riding Point Grand Bahama Fly FishingThe Bahamas have a well-deserved reputation for the best bonefishing in the world.  Grand Bahama is one of the best in the Bahamas. The north shore of Grand Bahama holds several hundred square miles of flats, inlets and mangroves that comprise a huge area of fishing grounds where you are unlikely to see another boat all day. These areas are packed with bonefish that are less pressured, and therefore more likely to take your fly than their brethren elsewhere in the world.

The north shore of Grand Bahama has the largest bonefish habitat around the island, comprising several hundred square miles of flats, inlets, and mangrove-covered cays literally teeming with large, wild bonefish. It is not uncommon to see dozens, if not hundreds, of fish in a single day.

Grand Bahama is the place to catch large bonefish - those trophy fish we all dream about - in excess of 10 pounds. Fish in the 10 - 12 pound range are fairly common. The average size of landed bonefish is between 5 and 6 pounds - somewhat larger than the average you will find on most other bonefish flats around the world.

Most fishing is done from a poled 16' Dolphin boat with 85 hp Yamaha, although in several areas the wading is first-rate. The flats vary in nature; many exhibit a soft marl or mud bottom, while others support turtle grass, and still others consist of firm, white sand. In all, multiple species of shrimp, crabs, and other bonefish prey are plentiful.

Permit are quite frequently encountered at various times of the year. Multiple species, such as barracuda, several species of jack, small lemon and blacktip sharks, and snappers can be found in and around the flats that hold bonefish.

For a different experience, nearby offshore reefs provide great action - a short boat ride from the Club will take you there. The reefs around Grand Bahama hold dozens of species, among them the prized grouper, as well as jacks, snapper, sharks, mackerel, and amberjack.

Travel Information for North Riding Point Club

Freeport International Airport is the arrival and departure point for air travel to Grand Bahama. It is a large facility, capable of handling transatlantic jet aircraft. US Customs and Immigration are located at the airport to pre-clear departing passengers for US destinations. The airport provides modern, comprehensive aircraft servicing facilities and a fixed-base operation for private aircraft.

Several major airlines serve Freeport on a daily basis including American Eagle, Bahamasair, Continental and Laker International. The majority of scheduled flights arrive from Miami, with several flights from ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

US citizens must have a valid passport to enter the Bahamas that is good six months past the duration of your trip. Non-US citizens should carry passports and valid US visas so that they may transit easily in and out of the US.  Make sure your passport is not damaged and has at least two unstamped pages.

The lodge will provide transportation to and from the airport; however, if desired, there are several car rental companies in Freeport, and taxi service is available through two or three major companies, as well as privately-owned and operated cabs. We advise that the rate be fixed with the cab driver prior to engaging the cab. The fare from the airport to the Club should not exceed $50 for 2 to 4 persons.
